Dog Grooming - Dog grooming tips and dog grooming supplies for your dog.

Dog Grooming

Regular dog grooming to keep your dog clean and healthy

Proper dog grooming is important to both you and your dogs. Dog grooming should be taken seriously as it is actually part of dog health care. Good dog grooming will make you dog handsome or pretty regardless of the dogs breeds. Also, Dog grooming sessions will give you a chance to interact with your dog and allows you to check you dog's health. Neglected dog grooming may cause fleas, lice, skin disease or even more serious dog health problems.

Generally, dog grooming involves the following areas:

1. Coat
2. Eyes, Ears & Teeth
3. Nails

Dog Grooming - The Coat

The amount of dog grooming for the coat required depends on the breed. For short- haired dogs, simple brushing is sufficient. As for longer-haired dog breeds like Yorkshire Terriers and Poodles, you need to comb and brush frequently. Combing will remove tangled hairs while brushing will help remove dead hairs. This simple dog grooming exercise that may take only minutes a day (again depending on your dog breed) will give you dog a clean and glossy coat.

Dog Grooming - Eyes, Ears & Teeth

You should devote part of your dog grooming sessions to the eyes, ears and teeth.

  • Clean your dog's eyes regularly with non-medicated eye drops to remove discharge or to heal irritated eyes.
  • Use baby oil to clean the dog's ears at least weekly
  • Examine your dog's mouth and gum for tartar or bad odor

Dog Grooming - Nails

Larger outdoor dogs may not need trimming as they wear their nails down naturally. However, puppies and small dogs that spend most of their time indoors need their nails to be trimmed. So make sure you include nail trimming as part of the dog grooming process.

When trimming the nails, just cut the tip of the nails and be careful not to cut to into the quick. Most importantly, use special dog nail clippers and not human nail clippers to avoid causing injury and bleeding to your dog.

Dog Bathing

If dog grooming sessions are frequent, your dog may not need bathing that often, not more than once a month. Do not bathe your dog just because it smells as dogs are supposed to have an odor. Daily dog grooming should be able to minimize dog odor to a great extent.

When you do happen to bathe your dog, be careful of the following:

  1. Put cotton in your dog's ears

  2. Apply mineral oil in the corner of your dog's eyes to protect against soap irritation

  3. Use warm water with mild soap (preferably specialized dog shampoo and not human shampoo)

  4. Remember to rinse the shampoo off completely, if not, it may irritate your dog's skin

  5. Help towel your dog dry after that

Groom your dog like a "show" dog and you will be rewarded with the small amount of time needed for dog grooming. And ultimately, proper dog grooming will keep your dog clean, happy and healthy!
