Dog houses are important as they are homes to dogs. Besides providing the necessary shelter, dog houses "den-like" environment can give comfort to dogs.

There are many different types of ready-made dog houses designs in the market, each available in different sizes and materials, ranging from the traditional wooden and barn or igloo styled dog house to portable and the latest prefabricated plastic dog house.

In the case of DIY dog houses, the designs are usually the simple wood structural foam plastic style. Detailed dog house plans are supplied together with DIY dog house sets to allow you to build your dog house in just minutes. DIY dog houses, though not as fancy as ready made dog houses, can still be a special home to dogs if they are build properly. The DIY dog house plans must be followed closely.

Whether you are buying ready-made or DIY dog houses, here are some tips to help you choose from the vast array of dog houses available in the market:


Size of dog houses

  • Dog houses should be big enough for dog to turn around inside and lie down flat. As a rule of thumb, dog houses should be twice the length of adult dogs.
  • When checking the size of dog houses, look at both outer and inner dimensions. Some dog houses with fancy designs may be actually smaller than they seem.

Environment of dog houses

  • Dog houses for outdoor use should be raised off the ground so that it allows airflow and prevent moisture from getting in from the ground.
  • Dog houses should cater to specific environments. In hot climates, well vented dog houses are recommended. As for cold and damp climates, dog houses with good insulation are more appropriate.

Some dogs do not take some time to get used to dog houses, especially when they are first introduced. To get your dog akin to the new dog house, you can try putting dog treats or dog toys in the house to entice him. Some experts also recommend putting your dog's favorite blanket or clothing with your scent in the dog house to encourage him to enter on his own.

Also, always try to feed your dog and make your him sleep in the dog house. If you stick to this dog house system, your dog will gradually associate the dog house as their sweet home.
