Dog toilet training
- Toilet training your dog to use a litter box

Dog Toilet Training – What you must do to train your dog to use the litter box.

Much has been said about dog toilet training because lets face it, we love dogs but no one wants to have them pooping around the house. Surprisingly, toilet training your dog to use the litter box or to use a designated toilet area isn’t very hard at all and no aids or special equipment are needed to toilet train your dog.

Firstly with puppies, you should attempt to feed them at regular intervals. Most vets will advice you to feed your dog twice a day. This is fine. You do however want to try to keep these feedings at the same time each day. This is to get your dog’s system into a regular schedule.

It is advised to actually give your dog more than it can have in one feeding and then to remove any food leftover once the puppy is done eating. Generally the dog would be looking to go to the toilet about 30-45 minutes after a meal. This is when you have to be on the lookout because at this point your puppy is most likely going start sniffling around to look for a good spot to do its business.

Once it does that either encourage it to go out to the garden or carry your dog to the toilet area or litter box and contain it in that area until it is done. Immediately after your dog is done remember to praise it and if you feel like it, give it a little treat.

As much as possible, always use the same commands. This rule applies to all forms of dog training and is a proven method for training your dog well.

If all goes well with toilet training your dog, you will no longer have to worry about you puppy or adult dog leaving a mess around your house. In fact, if toilet trained well, your dog will automatically stop what it is doing and head to its ‘spot’ to do its business.

If you are trying to encourage your dog to use the garden as it’s toilet, remember to let it out when it starts heading towards the door or scratching it. For your own convenience you can also install a little doggie flap for your dog so that it can go in and out of the house as and when it needs to without bothering you.
