Dog Toys

Your guide to buying and using dog toys

Dog toys are becoming a necessity for dogs. Dog toys can be used effectively in dog training and can also help kill boredom in dogs. In fact, dog toys can greatly affect your dog's behavior. Hence, you should give careful consideration when buying dog toys.

Generally, dog toys can be categorized into 5 main types:

1. Chewing Dog Toys
- These are dog toys designed to let dogs chew and gnaw on so as to keep them from chewing other things. Since dog has natural desire to chew, these dog toys can give your dog an enjoyable past time. Also, chewing helps keep your dog's teeth strong and healthy. Common Chewing Dog Toys include hard rubber toys, rope bones and even tennis balls.

2. Chasing/ Retrieving Dog Toys
- These types of dog toys are the most fun for both the owner and the dog, especially if it's a sporting dog. These dog toys work by exciting the dog's natural chase instinct. Frisbees are the most popular type of dog toys in this category.

3. Killing Dog Toys
- These can be soft dog toys or squeaky toys for your dog to "kill". Soft dog toys will appeal to dogs that like to shake or kill "preys". Made of either rubber or stuffed, these dog toys can provide hours of harmless fun to your dog.

4. Comforting Dog Toys
- On the other hand, your old clothes, blankets or towels with your smell can be very comforting to your dog. These "dog toys" will keep your dog calm and serene. Also available are fuzzy dog toys, which are made of special materials that can maintain the dog's odor for extended period of time. Because of this, most dogs will treat fuzzy dog toys as their buddy!

5. Teasing Dog Toys
- Teasing dog toys are best for dogs that can get bored easily as they would certainly enjoy the challenge of solving a puzzle. The dog will have to work diligently to get to the treats. Kong toys or Cube dog toys are excellent examples of this.

Here are some useful tips when buying and using dog toys.

Tips For Buying Dog Toys:

  • Buy only safe dog toys with no loose parts that can be chewed or ingested
  • Choose dog toys appropriate for your dog's size
  • All soft toys should be machine washable for your convenience
  • Understand which dog toys require supervision
  • Check labels for child safety

Tips For Using Dog Toys

  • Have a variety of dog toys for your dog, preferably one of each type. One to chew, one to "kill", one for comfort, etc.

  • Always offer only selected and not all the dog toys at one time. Also, rotate frequently. This will help keep your dog excited.

  • Arrange interactive playing sessions with your dog as much as possible. Hide and Seek and Retrieving are simple games you can play with you dog. Dog toys plus interactive sessions will enhance the bonding between you and your dog.
