Poodle Guards Baby & Barks Incessantly While Owner Drinks Tea…

Springer Spaniel Defensive-Aggression Problems (No, it’s not Springer Rage!!!)

-----------------------------------------------------

POODLE GUARDS BABY…

Dear Mr. Katz,

I received your book, bought a pinch collar, and things have been improving with my male standard poodle, Moxie.

[To read about the book she’s referring to, take a look at:

http://www.dogproblems.com/cgi-local/cart.pl?referrer=ezine122 ]

We are trying to maintain our Alpha status with Moxie. We recently had a baby and Moxie started to become protective of her toward males who approached the stroller. He even nipped at someone, once! This was my motivation to get your packet of book and tapes and things seem to be better. But here is a question that your book did not seem to address:

I can often tie Moxie up outside a place that I visit often and he will not bark. But he will bark, intermittently and noisily, when I tie him up in

front of a place I do not frequent. I can even not tie him and just tell him to lie down and he will stay in front of the places I visit frequently. The last time I tied him up in front of a cafe (I live in Brooklyn). I always make sure I can see him and I keep my eye on him, sometimes he can see me, too-- he barked incessantly and it was totally not relaxing to have tea with my friend and my baby in this place with my dog barking away, disturbing everyone's peace. So how do I train him not to bark while I am doing errands or in a cafe and he waits outside?

Thank you and thanks for your good advice.

Sincerely, Dinah

Dear Dinah:

Well, since you’ve read my book… you know that I recommend you leave the pinch collar on your dog and administer a firm correction anytime your dog exhibits unwanted behavior…

… And you’re familiar with the concepts of timing, consistency and motivation… so… here’s what I need to know from you:

- What happens when you correct him for barking or nipping?

- In regard to barking while you are inside having tea: When you run out and correct him, which of the three keys (timing, consistency or motivation) do you think you are screwing up? Here’s a hint: It’s usually timing or motivation. If your corrections are motivational, then you’ve only gotta be consistent two or three times—at the most—before the behavior is extinguished.

SPRINGER SPANIEL AGGRESSION PROBLEMS…

Dear Adam,

I have a serious problem that is escalating. Within the last year, my 5 year old Springer Spaniel has taken to growling at me in several situations and even more ferociously when I try to discipline him. I am frustrated and even a little scared of getting bitten by him. Most of the time he is docile and sweet but this behavior is really scaring me. The first situation involves the bed. My boyfriend does not like a dog on the bed so I started pushing him off. The growling started. Finally, we solved that by not letting him sleep on the bed or be in the bedroom when my boyfriend is over. On the days he is not over, I do let the dog on the bed. Is this confusing to the dog?

[Adam: ] Oh, yes! Big time!!! Never, ever let a dog with dominance or aggression issues sleep on the bed. Even dogs that are soft in temperament will sometimes start growling at their owners because they’ve let the dog sleep on the bed.

Within any pack of dogs, the Alpha dog will always sleep on higher ground. And what happens when you allow your dog to sleep on the bed is that he spends 7 to 8 hours seeing you lay next to him in a submissive position. In fact, half the time the dog’s probably got his paw on top of your feet, or his muzzle on your leg. (Remember, being on top is being the ‘dominant’ one in the pack).

So, if you’re doing things to communicate to your dog that you’re the subordinate, then it is well within his realm to correct you when he thinks you’re doing something that you should not be doing. And the correction is done by biting.

[ She continues: ] If so, I would certainly keep him out of the bedroom entirely. By the way, he wears the pinch collar all the time and I have used it to give a correction. He growls even more. The second situation is that he often growls when people pet him on the stomach. He rolls over for them to pet him, as if he welcomes it, and then he growls. The third situation is jumping up to steal food off the kitchen counters. Today, I removed another prong, added the tag to the collar and set up a "trap". He went for the food. I yelled "no"

and ran over and yanked the collar hard. He started growling Ferociously as is his pattern now. I don't think my corrections are strong enough. Should I move to a shock collar? Also, could this be related to "Springer Rage" which I have heard about. I am desperate for any advice you can offer.

-- Fran

Dear Fran:

These are the types of e-mails that I actually like. It shows that you are THINKING and actually trying to use the techniques that I’ve outline in my book…

[ Here’s another shameless plug… check it out, at:

http://www.dogproblems.com/cgi-local/cart.pl?referrer=ezine 122b ]

What you’re experiencing is NOT Springer Rage. I don’t know why, but every time a Springer owner has a problem with aggression, it’s got to be, "Springer Rage!!!" It’s kind of funny.

Springer Rage is a condition where the dog will suddenly "flip out" with no correlation to any specific stimulus. It may be accompanied by seizure activity such as urination, dilated eye, and stiff motor movement, tunnel vision to the object or person being attacked.

Anyway, the behavior that YOU ARE SEEING is pretty common with Springers. I feel it is the result of weak nerves and over-breeding.

Here’s what you should do:

First, try this: Give your dog a firm correction. If he growls, but does not lunge forward, then casually back away and walk off after you administer the correction. This is very important; Because Springers have such weak nerves, when you correct a Springer, they tend to very easily slip into getting defensive when receiving a correction. (A dog with stronger nerves would not). So, even if you’re giving a correction which is of the appropriate motivation, they become defensive. Sometimes it can be a learned behavior.

Second, you may consider buying an electronic collar if you really feel that your corrections are not motivational. That is, if you have to keep correcting him for the same behaviors. However, be subtle about it. You should not allow the dog to know that you need to be holding the transmitter. Also, lean more towards using it to correct the dog for the stealing behavior. He’ll think that the correction is coming from the table itself, and thus will be less inclined to steal food off the table when you’re in another room.
Make sense?

That's all for this week, folks!
