11 Things You Must Know About Puppies

Majority of dog lovers prefer to adopt puppies rather than adult dogs for 3 reasons. One, puppies are cute. Who can resist petting puppies? Two, puppies are generally more trainable as they carry with them no past history. Three, puppies can become affectionate and attached to dog owners much faster.

While puppies can bring you lots of fun, caring for one may take quite a bit of effort, at least initially. The following list outlines 11 things you must know when adopting puppies.

  1. The best age for puppy adoption is between 6 to 8 weeks. Puppies need to be able to socialize with other dogs and human. The period from the 3rd to 6th weeks is where puppies first learn to socialize with other dogs. If puppies are taken away from the litter too soon, they may not be able to "interact" well with other dogs in the future. On the other hand, the longer you take to adopt the puppy, the longer it will take to adjust to living with you.

  2. When you first bring your adopted puppy home, make sure that he is not given excessive attention. Unfamiliar environment and people frighten puppies. Just let the puppy nose around quietly to get acquainted to his new home.

  3. To carry a puppy, place one hand firmly under his chest and the other under his hindquarters. This will give your puppy a sense of security.

  4. Initially, confine your puppy to a particular area of your house until he is taught to be clean (see Puppy Training). The confinement area should be neither too cold nor too hot and would be your puppy's sleeping and soiling place. Never let him out of the confinement area until he is properly trained.

  5. Get your puppy a comfortable bed. You can either buy a dog bed, a crate or improvise one with a carton box and blankets. Whatever it is, make sure that the sleeping place for your puppy allows him to stretch and go in and out easily. You may also want to include some dog toys for your puppy.

  6. On the first few nights, your puppy may cry. It helps if you can place a warm bottle of water in the bed and a ticking clock near to your puppy to make them feel secured. It is believed that puppies may associate the sound to their mother's heartbeat. Be patient and firm with your puppy. Puppies tend to get used to their new home pretty fast.

  7. Place some old newspapers in another section of the confinement area for your puppy to urinate and defecate. Place your puppy there every time after he wakes up, after eating and before going to bed. Read more on this in Puppy Training.

  8. Puppies usually weaned at 4 to 5 weeks old. Hence, your new puppy should have fully weaned and can eat solid dog food when you take him home after 6 weeks old. However, you may mix some milk or warm water to moisten the dog food initially. When feeding, make sure that there is plenty of fresh water supplies as well.

  9. Puppies should be fed 4 times a day at regular intervals as they grow very fast. Generally, puppies need double the calories as compared to an adult dog. A 6th to 8th weeks old puppy will need 60 calories per pound if its body weight. When it becomes a 1-year old adult dog, he would need only 30 calories per pound of body weight. Hence, you should gradually reduce the servings to twice a day as your puppy grows. You can do this easily by observing your puppy's interest in meals.

  10. Get a complete set of dog supplies for your puppy, including dog grooming supplies like comb, brush and nail clipper, dog collar and leash, dog bed or doghouse, food and water pan, dog treats, and other useful dog supplies for puppies.

  11. Give proper puppy training lesson to your puppy, most importantly housebreaking or known as paper training or crate training. These puppy training exercise will teach your puppy to soil only at acceptable areas and keep your house clean.
